Covenantal Commitments of the Pastor to the Consistory

Here is a sample covenant that a pastor and consistory can modify for their use.

 

Transformational learning—I will:

  • Seek personal growth and transformation through this process—personally, spiritually, and professionally—especially as it relates to church revitalization
  • Regularly report to the consistory concerning what I am learning as well as what I am beginning to question or wonder about
  • Lead the consistory in wrestling with questions of “So what?” and “How does that apply to us?”as new insights and learnings emerge from the network, and stay open to a new vision should God choose to reveal it

 

Covenantal accountability—I will:

  • Invest myself in this network group, and make attendance at each network meeting a priority
  • Share my personal calling statement with the consistory as the statement emerges and is refined, and become accountable for living it out
  • Annually evaluate myself, my ministry, and my growth, and share this evaluation with the consistory and the network
  • Review and renew this covenant annually with the consistory

 

Collegial support—I will:

  • Pray regularly for other network members and for the congregation, seeking God’s leading in our life and ministry and looking to the Holy Spirit for the courage to obey
  • Speak the truth in love and acknowledge honestly when I am reluctant to change or experience barriers to change
  • Support the consistory in its members’ ongoing growth as disciples of Jesus Christ and leaders of the congregation

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Covenantal Commitments of the Consistory to the Pastor

 

Transformational learning—We will:

  • Commit to ongoing spiritual growth and leadership development

oMake time to learn and grow together as a consistory

oCommit to spiritual formation—be willing to be coached in our spiritual development and our role as congregational leaders

  • Prayerfully consider the recommendations the pastor may bring
  • Practice spiritual discernment in evaluating how God is calling us to respond to and use what we are learning to help our congregation envision the future
  • Explore what our individual and corporate roles will be as we implement insights, decisions, and plans and accept the responsibility to lead the congregation in ongoing revitalization

 

Covenantal accountability—We will:

  • Make revitalization a regular part of our agenda, and ask for updates on progress (learning goals, insights, action steps)
  • Assess our openness to God’s leading and our progress and efforts through the lens of our emerging mission, vision, and values
  • Annually review our covenant, evaluate our relationships and progress, and learn from what we have done

 

Collegial support—We will:

  • Pray regularly for one another and for the congregation, seeking God’s leading in our relationship with each other and our life and ministry as a congregation, and looking to the Holy Spirit for the courage to obey
  • Communicate our ongoing revitalization efforts to the congregation
  • Support and encourage the pastor’s investment of time in the network
